Do You Need a Yoga Teacher to Practice Yoga?

Many people who are interested in taking up yoga are curious to know if they need a yoga teacher, more commonly called an instructor, in order to do so. The short answer to this question is no, though it can be extremely beneficial to find an instructor. The choice, however, is entirely up to you. When practicing yoga, you should feel completely comfortable at all times, and it can be difficult for some people to relax in group settings. While it is possible to hire a private yoga instructor, this can get expensive, so many people opt to teach themselves instead.

One of the simplest and cheapest (or even free) ways to teach yourself yoga is to do some research online. There are many websites that offer instructions on various yoga poses and techniques. Some will even outline a good yoga workout to meet your personal needs and fitness level. The only downside to these types of sites is that it is often difficult to know if you are really doing the exercises correctly. A good way to correct this is to find yoga videos online. Sites such as YouTube or some fitness related sites even offer instructional videos or clips from yoga workout videos. By using the internet as your tool and guide, you can find low-cost or even free ways of practicing this wonderful exercise. If you don’t have reliable access to the internet or if you don’t feel you’re up to the technological task, you can go the old fashioned route and buy or check out some yoga instruction books from a bookstore or your local library.

Many people also enjoy using yoga exercise tapes or DVDs. This is one of the surest ways to do the moves correctly and to have an instructor without really having one. If you still have access to a VCR, you can find old yoga video tapes on Ebay and other auction sites for next to nothing. Just be aware that some of these videos may be out of date and not up to the latest in yoga safety standards. There are also many newer yoga DVDs available if you’re willing to spend a little more. Either way, this will be cheaper than taking a yoga class or hiring a private instructor. You can read reviews and information on various yoga tapes and DVDs online to help you find the right choice.

You should be aware that there are many benefits that can only be gotten from having an actual yoga instructor. When learning in a classroom setting, you have the ability to ask questions of the instructor, to compare your techniques to others, and to have your own techniques professionally critiqued or assisted. You will also have more of an opportunity to learn about the spiritual aspects of yoga. However, you must do what makes you the most comfortable and happy. If you do decide to go the solo yoga route, just be sure that you do your research and that you are doing all workouts safely and correctly.
